A little bit of an explanation is needed regarding Bars and Cafes in Italy: If you want a quick espresso, cappuccino or cioccolato caldo (hot chocolate) then head for a 'Bar' (strange but true!). You can have a sandwich or a light snack, but the emphasis is not on having a alcoholic drink as in America or Britain, although you can have a nice beer if you want one. If you want something a bit more leisurely then head for a caffe: these are much more elegant places where you can sit down and watch the world go by while you have an aperitif. There is not much distinction between the food and drink you can get in a caffe or a bar, but most working Italians will use a bar for a quick coffee or snack.
