Nightmare City

one star

I was really disapointed in LA especialy when compared to other US cities: * The traffic is insane * Distances are enormous thus you have to take a car to drive somewhere * The city in itself is not very freindly for pedestrians * Public transport is bad * Culturaly the city didn't come across as very intresting... I wouldn't go out of my way to visit LA, exept if I'm a huge Disney Buff or I love beach life/sports.

Worst City in America (Congratulations Detroit!)

one star

I've lived here for three miserable months and can't wait to get out. Sure the weather is enjoyable (if you forget about the fact that L.A. has the most polluted air of any city in America). For brevity's sake I'll whittle down this citiy's worthlessness to three points: 1) Lack of public transportation. The rail system is a joke and the buses are incredibly unorganized and unreliable. Absolutely pathetic for a city this large. You can't walk anywhere, both because of safety and how spread out everything is. You MUST have a car, and even if you do, it takes you forever to get anywhere. 2) Safety. Just glance at the L.A. Times' homicide blog if you want to know more. 3) The people are jerks. Angelenos make New Yorkers and Parisians look like Saints. Do yourself a favor and try New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, San Diego or Miami (or really anywhere else) instead.

Horrible L.A.

one star

Most likely the worse city in the world...nothing is connected, terrible traffic almost 7 days a week, people behind wheel are insane, speeding, cutting lane, middle finger...everywhere you go you must drive or die at home. Public transportation is nearly useless, sometimes you can walk faster then the buses. Not much happening in Downtown, besides being asked for few quarters from those homeless, bars close at 2, last call at 1:40 :( by the time i got to the bar, people start to leave...feel so unsafe too. Don't get fooled by the hollywood movies, they only look cool on the big screen.

Disasterous

one star

The city was filthy, crowded, horribly overpriced and the residents were often rude and unwelcoming. I have never been so glad to depart a place than when I was on holiday in Los Angeles. There should be a warning to foreign travelers: avoid the locals.

The place to be for movie fans

five stars

OK, so when you get right into the city itself, it's a bit dingy by daylight. At night though, there is such a buzz about the place, especially Sunset Boulevard. And if you're a fan of the movies (like me), you cannot fail to be dragged into the glamour of it all. I adored LA, in particular Sunset Boulevard at night, Mann's Chinese Theatre, the backlot tour at Universal Studios (an absolute MUST!), Melrose, strolling through Beverly Hills, Venice Beach and just the whole atmosphere around the place. I was even mistaken for a film actor when walking back to the hotel from the gym one morning!

The cream of the crop

five stars

LA has a little bit of everything imaginable! The scene is always vibrant and most people are approachable if you are in the good parts. At night it is advisable to take public transit because parking is horrendous! Some of the best and brightest people reside here. Stay focused on your ambitions and dont change your goals to meet another's.

head for the beach!!

four stars

We spent the first night on Hollywood blvd which frankly was dissapointing. LA city is not all its cracked up to be, esp. downtown which is soo rough and run down. We moved on to stay in venice beach, which was amazing, now this was what we expected LA to be. Sun, sea sand, palm trees and classic LA lifestyles. Try to rent something, i recommend a bike if ur on the beach, and head down to santa monica. also catch the bus to Malibu, a great getaway. Take a tour around the hills and see how the other half live. Also Universal studios is great, amazing to see all the film sets, although next time im gonna go to another studio like WB or paramount. Overall, LA is a great place to visit.

The Decline of Western Civilization, when in Rome......

five stars

You must rent a car if you want to go ANYWHERE in California. Although driving may be difficult, it is on the other side of the road, and people drive much much faster and agressively then they do in most other places. I laughed when I heard that nobody would let them over, because it is hard to drive in L.A. like any other big city, but most other big cities have great public transportation systems. It would be great if L.A. had one, but it would only be good for the tourists, it is a car culture, the area is just too vast, people travel an hour or two, or more commuting everyday to and from Los Angeles. That being said, it is a great place, but you really have to know where to go, it is a huge area, look at places that are a bit further out, like orange county, santa barbara, or even deeper inland, places like the huntington library are great. San Diego is not out of reach either, be like a Californian when you are there, rent car and drive it far, get a convertible, cruising is an american past-time. Go to the beach, a burger joint, a mexican restaurant. Lots of cultures there, and a lot of great shopping. Lots of fun, bring lots of money in Hollywood.

Great for: Beaches, Scuba/Snorkeling, Skiing/Snowboarding, Hiking/Camping, History/Culture, Theatre/Music, Nightlife, Family Holidays
