Getting there

Nottingham is easily accessible: the M1 motorway runs close-by as it winds north from London and the city is well served by buses and trains.

Nottingham Railway Station, on the southern edge of the city centre, has frequent and fast services to London (2hr), Birmingham (1.5hr) and Manchester (2hr). Midland Mainline (www.midlandmainline.com) serves East Midlands, London and goes north too. Central Trains (www.centraltrains.co.uk) runs northwest to Liverpool and as far south as Stansted Airport.

Coaches are a cheaper option, mostly operating from Broadmarsh bus station. There are five direct services to Birmingham and around 10 to London. Bus services to outlying villages are regular and reliable. Services to Southwell, Eastwood and Newark mostly depart from Broadmarsh station. Trent Barton buses (www.trentbuses.co.uk) depart from Broadmarsh and Victoria bus stations. Nottingham East Midlands Airport (www.nottinghamema.com) puts further destinations in reach. Low-cost airlines fly daily to a selection of mainly European destinations, such as Paris, Amsterdam and Edinburgh. The airport is a 45min bus trip from the railway station and city centre; services run every half hour.

Getting around

Nottingham's award-winning bus services (www.nctx.co.uk) are distinguished by new bus fleets and innovative ticketing, such as the cheap, all-day Kangaroo ticket. The city tram system (www.thetram.net) is a novel way to explore both the city centre and nearby Hucknall. Nottingham also boasts a well regulated taxi system. Green cabs can be flagged down; these offer Council-set fares.
