Wells is an absolutely beautiful town about 20 miles south of Bristol (head out of town on the A37 and follow the signs) and a visit here makes for an excellent day trip. It may be small but it's got a wonderfully impressive Cathedral, which is rated as one of the best in the country. Built in the twelfth century, it's splendid inside and out - try and imagine what the exterior would have looked like originally, when all the carvings were painted in bright colours. Next to the Cathedral is a castle-like building, which is equally gorgeous. Surrounded by a moat, on which ducks and swans travel, you can walk all the way around it, taking in some marvellous views along the way. Look out for one of the most ancient streets in England, adjacent to the west wing of the Cathedral - a perfectly preserved and completely unique terrace. After sightseeing, relax in one of the coffee shops off the cobbled market square, where there are general markets Wednesdays and Saturdays 9am-4pm.
